When I broke the news that i was interested in exploring Nagaland, I was met with so many doubts - concerns - misinformation - and borderline hysteria. Nagaland has a strong rooted cultural influence and is sure complex and nuanced. But there is no way you can come to the other side of it not falling in love with the people, the craft, the culture and the cuisine. Without delving deep into the technicalities, lets just say it mainly houses 17 heterogenous tribes. There are similarities and overlaps, but there are distinct differences too, history has been a witness of their differences! One of the most striking difference is that each tribe has its own dialect. How does intra - city communications happen, you ask? Well, for easy communication, trade & commerce they have adopted Nagamese as their lingua- franca.
Amidst all the cultural complexities what stood out was the craft. I saw patterns, repetition, integration, and symbolism. For instance, the murals on doors, the house structures, the soft furnishings, mithun shaped tables and chairs etc, beads on the light lamps, interiors adorned with handloom fabric. And all of these while in alignment with nature.
Now lets have a look at the associated media:
